How To: Acclimate your new Blood Python

Hey Everyone,

We just wanted to do a quick How To get your new Blood Python set up and acclimating well. This is NOT the only way to do it, but this is what works well for us. It is very important to keep in mind that Blood Pythons are often more sensitive to environmental changes compared to some of the more commonly available species. Often a tame animal will be defensive in their new surroundings until they settle into their new routine. Think of it like having to move in the middle of a school year, and you have to adapt to your new life, this is no different for Blood Pythons.

1) Caging: A secure and easy to clean enclosure that is opaque on at least three sides. The animal needs to feel very secure in this space. Offer a hide box or two.

2) Water: This needs to be changed 2-3x a week. Blood Pythons enjoy fresh, clean water. And may not drink even a full bowl if the water is stale.

3) Temperature: We offer all of our animals a basking spot 84-86 degrees.

4) Feeding: Allow your new addition to settle in for 5-7 days unbothered outside of cleaning. Then offer an appropriately sized meal after this period. It is more important to get them eating than it is to start handling them right away.

5) Handling: After making sure your cage is set up properly, temperatures are dialed in, and the animal is feeding 2-3 times, you can begin doing brief handling sessions. End each handling sessions on a positive note, even if it just for a few minutes. You can increase the amount of time handled each week.

Go slow, take your time and understand that when you get a new Blood Python, its entire world has changed, the smells, the sights, a new keeper and their schedule etc. This is meant to be a quick read in order to get you started with your wonderful new snake! It is not a comprehensive care guide. Talk with the breeder about more of the nitty gritty, and if they cannot provide that for you, find a different breeder!
